Matt Whelan


Matt is a Solicitor in the Birmingham corporate commercial department, frequently advising on a broad range of work with domestic and international dimensions as well as across both the private and public sectors.

He has recently undertaken an international in-house secondment at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company in Abu Dhabi.

Matt has particular experience in a variety of commercial contracts, including information technology (spanning all aspects of software, hardware, licensing, implementation, intellectual property, maintenance and support), website/platform terms and conditions, subscriptions, sponsorship, service and outsourcing arrangements.

In addition, Matt has worked on M&A transactions (acting for either the buyer/seller), shareholder agreements, articles of association, constitutions and general CoSec support. Matt is also experienced in strategic procurement matters, running legal support from pre-tender to award and beyond.

Matt works across a range of sectors including digital technology, oil and gas, leisure, outsourcing and aviation.

During his training contract, Matt undertook seats in Real Estate (including both commercial and housing and regeneration work); Projects and Construction (both contentious and non-contentious); and Corporate Commercial departments, Matt gained a wide variety of experience covering the firm's core practice areas.

Extracurricularly, Matt is part of the firm's national Sustainability Committee (focusing on technology and working practices), operates as a mentor for three separate organisations in and around Birmingham and is an active participant in business development across the firm.
