Matt Whelan
Matt is an Associate in the Birmingham commercial team, frequently advising on a broad range of work with domestic and international dimensions as well as across both the private and public sectors.
He has recently undertaken an international in-house secondment at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company in Abu Dhabi and in 2022, Matt was listed in Legal 500 as a 'Key Lawyer' in Trowers' Tier 1 ranking for Local Government work in the West Midlands, described as 'a highly skilled team with great personal skills and excellent leadership'.
Matt has particular experience in a variety of complex and high value commercial contracts, including:
- information technology (spanning all aspects of artificial intelligence, software, hardware, licensing, implementation, intellectual property, maintenance and support);
- website/platform terms and conditions;
- subscriptions, sponsorship, data, goods and services agreements; and
- distribution / outsourcing arrangements.
His data experience includes advising processors, controllers and data subjects on a wide variety of unusual and complex data processing activities, including amongst others, data scraping, the use of medical and/or care records. In addition, Matt frequently works on M&A transactions (acting for either the buyer/seller), providing particular support in relation to data protection compliance. He is also experienced in strategic procurement matters, running legal support from pre-tender to award and beyond.
Matt's sector experience includes cyber security, digital technology, artificial intelligence, oil and gas, leisure, sport, transport and aviation.
Extracurricularly, he is part of the firm's national Sustainability Committee (focusing on technology and working practices), and is part of the Innovation Alliance Cyber and Transport Working Groups in the West Midlands.
