According to the World Green Building Council, buildings are responsible for 39% of global energy related carbon emissions: 28% from operational emissions, from energy needed to heat, cool and power them, and the remaining 11% from materials and construction.  It is a monumental challenge, but we can help.

ESG in the Built Environment

The construction sector stands at the front line of the environmental and social impact on our world. Incorrectly managed, development can have a devastating effect on its surroundings, but conversely it also holds the key to creating better and more sustainable environments by using smart building materials, improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon (both embedded and operational), benefiting flora and fauna and enhancing the wellbeing of occupants.

Modern Methods of Construction – MMC involve the offsite manufacture of some or all of the component parts of a building. It encompasses a range of solutions, not just full scale volumetric or bathroom pods.  We are market leaders in drafting contracts and appointments to reflect the unique requirements of MMC and are in close dialogue with all relevant interested parties, from planning to insurers and funders to help MMC succeed.  For the environment, the potential advantages of MMC are clear, including:

• increased efficiency and less waste during the build
• faster building time, allowing on-site activities such as groundworks to progress alongside the main build in the offsite factory
• reduced on-site staff requirements allowing diversification of the workforce
• better building performance through precision design and manufacture, including huge reductions in energy consumption

All these make Modern Methods of Construction a greener, less wasteful and more efficient way to build, and a means of reducing carbon emissions, both during the construction phase and, even more importantly, throughout the life of the building.

Social Value – construction is as much about the people as the asset.  Even a single building can deliver value to the people living and working in and around it.  The drive for social value can be as simple as asking a "day one" question about what this building means to the people who will experience it.
